1978 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras — Police Baton Charges

The first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras march took place on the night of 24 June 1978. What began as a march along Oxford Street was broken up by NSW Police using batons. Fifty-three people were arrested. Their names were published in the newspapers the following day — a serious consequence in an era when being publicly identified as gay could cost someone their job, their housing, or their family.

The march occurred under the tenure of Police Commissioner Mervyn Wood (#14). The baton charges are one of the defining moments in the history of NSW Police and LGBTIQ communities — establishing the context of institutional hostility in which the hate crime deaths of the following decades occurred.
