The Kings Cross Police Area Command (PAC) covers Kings Cross, Potts Point, Elizabeth Bay, and adjoining areas. Kings Cross was historically one of Sydney’s most significant gay and transgender social spaces — its nightlife scene predated the Oxford Street precinct, and many LGBTIQ community members lived and socialised in the area throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

Historical significance:

Kings Cross features in the documented geography of anti-gay violence in multiple ways: as a location where gay men socialised before the shift of the community hub to Oxford Street; as a location connected to disappearances and deaths; and as an area where the complex interplay between policing, nightlife, and the LGBTIQ community played out over decades. The Kings Cross detectives’ division was also specifically examined by the Wood Royal Commission (1995–97), which found that “almost all the senior ranks, including the chief detective, were involved in serious and organised corrupt activities” — a corruption culture that overlapped precisely with the peak period of anti-gay violence and inadequate investigation.

Simon Knight case:

Kings Cross PAC became directly involved in the investigation of the disappearance of Simon Knight (missing since July 2005, Newtown area) following a transfer from Redfern Police Area Command. In Report 58 (2021), Simon’s parents Robert Knight and Robyn Conlan documented their experience of seeking an independent review: after a 2019 meeting at Redfern Police Station, they were told that Simon’s case file would be transferred to Kings Cross PAC for review. After four months without contact, they had to follow up themselves. The review report was eventually discussed with them in September 2019, but they were not permitted to take a copy.
