Sydney City Police Area Command

The Sydney City Police Area Command (PAC) covers the CBD, The Rocks, Haymarket, Pyrmont, Glebe, Chippendale, and surrounding areas. The PAC office is co-located with the Day Street police station at 192 Day Street, Sydney. It is part of the Central Metro Region.

Historical significance:

The Sydney City command covers the broader CBD and inner harbour area — the civic and commercial heart of Sydney, and the site of significant moments in LGBTIQ history. The first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras march (24 June 1978) began in Hyde Park and moved through the CBD before the policing confrontation on Oxford Street (which sits within Kings Cross and Surry Hills PAC jurisdictions). The early gay rights movement organised and marched through city streets that now fall within this command’s jurisdiction.

The Rocks:

The Rocks and its surrounding waterfront precincts were among the earliest documented sites of Sydney’s queer social geography — sailors’ pubs, boarding houses, and waterfront spaces where men met long before the formation of the Oxford Street precinct. While most of the documented hate crime cases in this project cluster in the eastern suburbs and inner west, the CBD and waterfront areas are part of the longer historical arc.

Glebe:

Glebe, covered by Sydney City PAC (and also historically by adjacent commands), was a significant area of LGBTIQ community life, particularly from the 1970s onward. The area’s share-house culture and proximity to the University of Sydney made it a gathering point for gay and lesbian communities before Oxford Street became the dominant hub.

Historical command structure:

The predecessor command(s) covering the Sydney CBD area before the current Sydney City PAC designation are not yet fully documented for this project. The exact reorganisation history of Day Street, The Rocks, and adjoining CBD commands needs research.
