Frederick Hanson

Frederick Hanson served as Commissioner of Police from November 1972 to December 1976. His tenure fell in the years immediately preceding the emergence of the modern gay rights movement in Sydney, and preceded by only two years the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Male homosexual acts remained criminal offences throughout his tenure, and enforcement against gay men at beats and in public spaces continued under his command.
