John Charles Mortimer

Constable John Charles Mortimer was the Officer in Charge (OIC) of the original police investigation into the death of David Lloyd-Williams at North Head on 24 August 1978. He was attached to Manly Police.

Constable Mortimer attended the location at 3:30pm on the day of the death, by which stage other police were already present and the body had been recovered by the Police Rescue Squad and conveyed to Manly District Hospital. He provided a statement to the Coroner; the inquest was held on 23 October 1978 before City Coroner Leonard James Nash.

In his statement he recorded his view that Mr Lloyd-Williams had driven to North Head and jumped from the cliff due to depression following the breakdown of his marriage, and that there were “no suspicious circumstances.”

When contacted by the Sackar Inquiry in August and September 2023, Mr Mortimer advised that he did not wish to participate.
