Ken Moroney

Ken Moroney served as Commissioner of Police from April 2002 to August 2007. His tenure saw one of the most significant early attempts to revisit the cold case deaths from the peak violence period: Operation Taradale, established in 2005 under Detective Sergeant Steve Page. Operation Taradale was a dedicated review of a number of suspicious deaths of gay men from the 1980s and early 1990s. In 2005, Deputy State Coroner Milledge conducted inquests into the deaths of Ross Warren and John Russell, finding that both had been murdered and identifying failures in the original investigations. These findings represented the first formal acknowledgement by NSW legal institutions that the deaths of gay men in this period had not received adequate scrutiny. Commissioner Moroney presided over the force during this important but partial reckoning with the past.
