Mick Fuller

Mick Fuller served as Commissioner of Police from March 2017 to January 2022. His tenure produced two of the most significant institutional acts of acknowledgement in this project’s scope. In 2018, Strike Force Parrabell delivered its final report, examining the deaths of a number of gay men in the 1980s and 1990s and identifying systemic failures in the original investigations. Also in 2018, Commissioner Fuller personally delivered a public apology to the “78ers” — those arrested at the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in 1978 — acknowledging that NSW Police had acted wrongly. A $1 million reward was offered for information relating to the death of Scott Johnson, and in May 2020 an arrest was made in connection with that case. The arrest and subsequent prosecution represented the first time criminal accountability was sought in connection with the wave of anti-gay homicides from the 1980s–90s period, under Commissioner Fuller’s direct command.
