Tony Lauer

Tony Lauer served as Commissioner of Police from March 1991 to September 1996. His tenure is overshadowed by the Wood Royal Commission into NSW Police corruption, which ran from 1995 and exposed systemic misconduct across the force including the protection of organised crime and widespread bribery. Although the Royal Commission did not specifically examine failures in anti-gay violence investigations, it established the institutional context — a deeply corrupt and unaccountable police culture — within which the inadequate responses to hate crimes of the 1980s had occurred. Anti-gay violence in Sydney began to decline during the early 1990s, though it did not cease. Commissioner Lauer retired before the Wood Royal Commission concluded its work; his successor inherited both the ongoing inquiry and its findings.
